The manual gem drill by Covington Engineering is Model number 605NMGD.  Use the gem drill on medium to soft gemstone material or glass.  Some of the features are high speed motor, foot operated speed control, lever operated with 3/4" stroke, bracket and motor can be quickly adjusted for height or removed and mounted horizontally to convert unit into a buffer or carver. The manual gem drill is a versatile, light duty drill that can do fast, accurate drilling.  Unit is powered by a 1/15 HP, 5000 RPM variable speed motor.  Comes with 1/4" Jacob chuck and key, water pan, instructions and guarantee.  Agate and jasper are not recommended for this drill. The drill is used with water, and a dike surrounds the item to be drilled. To make the drills last longer, use what is called a pecking operation, lifting the drill bit up and down, which allows the gem material to escape and be flushed out the hole. Bonded diamond drills bits are available, with sizes: .75mm, 1.00, 1.50mm, 2.00mm, 2.5mm, and each sells for $1.00.  This is a solid drill bit.  There are also bonded core drill bits (these have a hole in the center) which some feel is better for removing the material from the gemstone.  These drill bits are available: 1.00mm, 1.50mm, 2.00mm, 2.50mm, 3.00mm and 3.5mm, and they sell for $2.50 up to $4.75.
