Bill Myers supplier of Rapid Polish # 61 has made thousands of cabs and he was kind enough to share some tips on making freeform cabs. Thank you Bill! We appreciate you sharing your knowledge about making Freeform cabs which are irregular shaped cabochons that do not fit into available normal jewelry findings. "The first step is to use ruler to mark areas of slice for use, allowing a small margin for decal placement, then score with glass cutter or tile cutter. Place the scored edge over bench top, and apply pressure to extended edge to break. This works with almost all jaspers, flints, petrified woods, obsidians, and to some extent Brazil agates. After section to be used, or multiples, is broken off, cut the decal by using colored paper folded in half with shape of 1/2 of decal drawn on it. (A french curve from stationery store is a good tool to start with.) Cut this decal out with scissors and when opened up, it will be balanced from side to side. This makes a more appealing stone. When making a decal, try to have most of the surface edges curved a bit, as a straight edge is harder to sand. Align the decal on clean area of blank piece, and carefully mark outer edge with pencil. Remove decal and apply crazy glue to an area 1/8" just inside of mark and apply decal. (Bill likes Quick Tite from Wal-Mart). After this sets, use glass cutter to finish scoring to trim and nibble off with pliers or tile nipper. At this stage, spray top of decal with clear varnish to protect decal while grinding to contour. We usually remove decal by using side of wheel. With crazy glue only on the outer edges, it is faster to get off. After back grinding bottom edge, place in a pan with some dish washing soap, and pour boiling water over the freeform and let cool. Rinse off and use a clean dop stick with a flat square edge and dop with Elmer's wood glue and let set overnight. This will stand a lot more heat than dop wax, and is faster. Dome, sand and polish. At final stage of sanding or polishing, glue dop will be soft enough to break off. Place in a clean container and pour boiling water over it and set for about 10 minutes. Remaining glue can be wiped off easily for mounting by wire wrapping or making your own findings. All chips should be saved for tumbling media.
